Butterfly Garden

We have completed a new water feature in our butterfly garden.  If you haven't seen our gardens, you are welcome to come around back and enjoy the flowers and herbs.

The Monarch migration in WNC begins in September and continues into November.  You can observe great numbers of these beautiful creatures wherever there are nectar flowers, such as goldenrod, asters, members of the daisy family, verbena and butterfly bushes.  So we planted nectar flowers in our garden to help the Monarchs on their way from Maine to Mexico.

In order to attract Monarchs in the spring and summer months, you also need to have a supply of host plants for the Monarch to lay its eggs on.  Monarch larvae will only eat milkweed, which contains a poison in its milky sap that makes the larvae caterpillar toxic and bitter so birds will leave it alone. Ask us for information about planting your own Monarch Waystation.
